Founded in 1869, Livermore is located in the Tri-Valley region East of San Francisco on Interstate 580 providing easy access to both Central Valley and the
San Francisco Bay Metropolitan area. In 1952 the University of California established what is now called the Lawrence Livermore Laboratories to do
research for nuclear energy. The Livermore Rodeo began in 1918 to raise funds for the Red Cross during World War I. The Livermore, Stockmen's Rodeo
Association has brought rodeo to Livermore for 77 years. Although Livermore has grown into an attractive suburban community where high tech industries are
increasingly visible the area's allure is being one of California's first historic wine districts. Members of the Livermore Valley Winegrowers Association are promoting their
area as an alternative to the Napa Valley, pointing out that it's less crowded, the wines are generally less expensive and it's closer to most of the San Francisco Bay
Area's seven million residents than Napa or Sonoma. Cooled by the Bay breezes the Livermore Valley is known best for their white wines. English sailor Robert Livermore, who picked up two Mexican land grants in 1830,
settled in the Livermore Valley and had grapes growing by the 1840's. Charles A. Wetmore, who served as California's chief viticultural officer, established Cresta
Blanca Winery in 1882, followed by the arrival of Carl H. Wente and James Concannon the next year. At the turn of the century, the valley had 5,000 acres of
vineyards and more than 50 wineries. Hit by phylloxera and Prohibition, the number had dwindled to six by the 1960s, although it's increasing again under new agricultural zoning protection.
To the southwest, Santa Clara Valley and the Livermore Valley merge northeast of San Jose, near present-day Freemont. Here, Mission San Jose' de Guadalupe
was established in 1797 (to the confusion of those who assume the mission is in the city of San Jose). The mission and adjacent pueblo were envisioned as a base
from which the troublesome tribes of the inland valleys could either be converted or subdued. On the eve of secularization, in 1832, Mission San Jose had reached
a ranking of third in conversions and livestock holdings. Later, in 1869, railroad baron and politician Leland Stanford and his brother Josiah started a winery just
east of the mission. The Swiss-born Weibels took over in 1940 and it's still a family enterprise. Within minutes from the hotel and the Livermore downtown area are the Retzlaff
Vineyards, Concannon Vineyard and Stony Ridge Winery, Murietta's Well Winery, Wente Brothers Estate Winery, Cedar Mountain Winery, Wente Brothers
Sparkling Wine Cellars and Restaurant and Livermore Valley Cellars. Amidst these wineries, and the gentle roller coaster ride through the undulating hills that
separate them is Ravenswood Historical site, an elaborate country estate and former winery. Livermore Area Recreation and Park District now administer the site. |
